The Origin

Pedro Caballero was a young Paraguayan immigrant with a dream. Jim Costello was an established business entrepreneur with a vision. An unlikelier pair could not be found, but once their paths crossed … there was no turning back!

The Team

Enthusiasm, passion, dedication, commitment ~ these qualities transcend borders and are synonymous with Team Tukã. Despite different home countries, cultures, ages and languages, the shared vision and camaraderie of Tukã team members are palpable.

Why Yerba Mate?

In 1964, the Pasteur Institute and the Paris Scientific Society concluded from their study of yerba mate that “it is difficult to find a plant in any area of the world equal to mate in nutritional value . . . [it contains] practically all of the vitamins necessary for life.” In some parts of South America, infusions prepared from the naturally caffeinated leaves of the yerba mate plant are more popular than coffee, 6 to 1. With a history and popularity spanning centuries, it is no wonder that some of the world’s largest companies have entered the yerba mate space.

The Tukã Difference

Deep in the subtropical rain forest of southeastern Paraguay, climate and soil conditions have converged to create the world’s finest yerba mate. This is where Tukã’s 100 family farmers and their ancestors have been harvesting yerba mate for generations. Our investment in their future, their families’ futures, and the preservation of our planet stands front and center. By being good stewards of our practice, we will protect their way of life for generations to come.

“The exhalation of the

yerba mate tree,

it gives a different

kind of hope for life”

— Cantalicio, Tukã Farmer
